In her last pre-baby show, Rachel will be joined onstage by producer and bass player Sean McLaughlin, drummer Mike Levesque, guitarist Zach Bloomstein, and violin player Josh Knowles.
Opening set by The Wednesdays!
August 27, 2014 - The first song that will end up on the new record is written. It's called "I Can't Swim." I decide it's not really that good, and put it away for a year and a half.
July 15, 2015 - I have lunch with my amazing friend and producer Sean McLaughlin, and we talk about the possibility of recording a new album.
March 10, 2016 - After about six months of rehearsing and a few shows with Sean on bass, Mike Levesque on drums, and Zach Bloomstein on guitar, Sean and I meet to listen to the 19 songs I'd written since finishing Kneel and Kiss the Ground in 2013. Sean reminds me that I'm an idiot and can't critique my own music well, and 11 songs make the cut - including "I Can't Swim."
March 31, 2016 - On the first day of tracking, we record drums and bass for a third of the songs.
August 11, 2016 - The twelfth and final track, "Spark" is written. Though I am initially convinced it will be a great track to close the album, it ends up in the prized slot of third track, as the voices of Eva Walsh, Mark Lipman, Danielle Miraglia, and Jenee Halstead, in combination with the glowing mandolin of Chris "Gooch" Bloniarz transform it from good to transcendent.
February 27, 2017 - After 18 days in the studio (and countless days at home writing string arrangements, horn arrangements, vocal arrangements, editing lyrics, and practicing my butt off) over the course of just about a year, recording stunningly skilled players of drums, bass, guitars, piano, organ, rhodes, banjo, mandolin, violin, viola, cello, upright bass, trumpet, trombone, flugelhorn, ukulele, and vocals, recording is done.
March 23, 2017 - Sean has worked his magic and patience creating amazing mixes and catering to my requests, and the songs come to Jeff Lipton for the final touch: mastering.
April 17, 2017 - The masters are ready, and weeks of work transforming the beautiful photography of Kevin Bonham into an art layout for the jacket, disc, and booklet are done, so my baby is ready to head to the printer.
May 10, 2017 - Everyone has kept their fingers crossed and the CDs finally arrive with all printing problems resolved just in time for:
May 12, 2017 - Album Release Show - I cannot tell you how excited I am to finally share the product of these last years of work with you, and I hope you will join me in celebrating this Friday! The incredible singers, songwriters, instrumentalists, performers, and humans Eva Walsh and Jenee Halstead will be playing opening sets.
